Winemaking

August is harvest time in Southern Oklahoma vineyards, and at Old Silo Winery we were busy crushing and pressing Seyval Blanc and Vidal grapes. These hybrid wine grapes will make a delicate white wine with a citrus quality. We can't wait to introduce this new wine in our tasting room!

We’re still thinking of names for our new wine. Any ideas?

Here are a few of our favorite pictures from the day!

Did you know the best wineries and vineyards are right at your back door? We’re talking about a new wine country, here in Oklahoma! Visit TravelOK.com/wineries to plan your road trip and then get ready to explore Oklahoma's wineries. And don’t forget to include Old Silo Winery in Tishomingo, OK for wine tasting and a tour. We’re just minutes from downtown Tishomingo and only a short drive from the Chickasaw Cultural Center and Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur.

Hope to see you soon! Cheers!

Old Silo Sangria

Sangria Recipe

There are so many ways to enjoy Old Silo Wines! They pair with your favorite foods and desserts and are the perfect compliment to your “me time.” One way to enjoy Old Silo Wines that you might not have thought of is as a base to a delicious Sangria! Sangria is easy to make and perfect for hot summer days. We like Blackberry Merlot as our base, but we highly suggest experimenting with all of our small-batch wines! Grab a bottle of wine and get ready to unwind with Old Silo Sangria.

1 bottle of Blackberry Merlot – Or another of your favorite Old Silo Winery wines. A medium-body red is always a good way to go for homemade Sangria.

1 cup of your favorite fruit, sliced – We like apples, oranges, and strawberries! But you can also try limes, blueberries, watermelon, or even pineapple!

1/4 C of brandy – Or try a little Grand Marnier for a subtle orange flavor.

Sugar to taste – Start with just a pinch and add up to 1 tablespoon. Remember you can always add more, but you can’t take it away once it’s mixed in there.

Directions – Place all your fruit at the bottom of a large pitcher. Pour in your wine and brandy, or other liqueur. Stir to combine. Add sugar pinch by pinch to taste. Refrigerate your pitcher for a few hours so it’s well chilled. For a little extra something, add a cup of sparkling water just before serving for a little fizz!

We Love Summer

We love summer in Tishomingo! There’s lots to see and do, and plenty of ways to beat the heat. Whether you’re coming back from the Blue River or getting ready for a night out, stop by Old Silo Winery. Nothing beats a perfect glass of wine on a summer day. And because our outdoor deck is shaded, you can enjoy the heat without the burn.

Have you tried our Cherri Noir yet? It’s one of our latest wines. You can read more about it here. It’s a prefect compliment to summer. Or try a glass of our award-winning Peach-O-Nay! Great for pool (or riverside) lounging. Come by, say, hi, and let’s raise a glass to summer!

Looking for more ideas? Check out the Chickasaw Country website for events nearby!

If you need us, we’ll be sipping Cherri Noir.

Old Silo Featured in the Johnston County Sentinel

We are so honored to have been profiled in the Johnston County Sentinel in their amazing Chamber of Commerce Column. Special thanks to Jordyn Frazier! Read the article online at the Johnston County Sentinel website.

Here are a few excerpts…

“When we opened the tasting room in September 2018, we knew how to make wine, but had never worked in retailing. Before opening, we turned to the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Durant for guidance and training on sales, marketing and social media advertising.” The SBDC will be producing a Success Story video on the winery in the near future, the first from Johnston County!

“Other than keeping up with lots of regulations, the biggest challenge is attracting customers, locally and through tourism. To build awareness [for] our winery, we network with other local businesses, the Johnston County Chamber, Chickasaw Country and Oklahoma Agritourism program staff. We really appreciate how very enthusiastic and helpful everyone has been about our winery.”

… Jim & Michele’s approach to winemaking is to make flavorful wines that please a variety of palates. As small batch winemakers, they produce limited edition wines, focusing mainly on berry and grape blended wines. They carry a few dry table wines like Shiraz, Merlot or Chardonnay. On average they offer about 10 different types of wine and announce their new wines throughout the year on Facebook and Instagram. In [their] vineyard they grow Chambourcin grapes, a French American hybrid well suited to Oklahoma's climate; from that they make a light bodied dry red wine.
